The Ward Hotel

Designed as a learning hotel, The Ward Hotel is a 23,000 sq. ft. boutique hospitality concept located in Ottawa that reimagines hospitality education through immersive, real-world experience. Transforming an existing residence into a functioning boutique hotel, the project creates a space where students engage in daily hotel operations while maintaining a high-quality guest experience.

Inspired by Ottawa’s watershed landscape, the design explores movement, convergence, and controlled overlap, allowing hospitality and education to coexist through intentional spatial planning. Strategic adjacencies, visual connections, and distributed touchdown learning spaces create opportunities for collaboration, mentorship, and experiential learning without compromising guest comfort, privacy, or operational efficiency.

The hotel is designed with flexibility in mind, adapting between standard boutique stays and extended-stay accommodations to support evolving hospitality needs. Spaces include guest rooms, flexible suites, food and beverage environments, hotel simulation spaces, teaching studios, breakout collaboration areas, and operational support spaces that reflect the realities of the hospitality industry. Canadian-sourced materials, furniture, and artwork reinforce a strong sense of place rooted in Ottawa’s landscape, culture, and craftsmanship.
